Tegus are large terrestrial lizards from South America.  With time and patience, they can tame down well, but will always remain food driven so care must be taken at feeding time.  These omnivorous lizards consume a wide range of foods including livefoods (crickets, locusts, cockroaches, mealworms, morio worms, fruit beetle larvae, earthworms and snails) as well as occasional shellfish, fish and defrosted rodents, as well as a wide range of leafy green vegetables and salads, root vegetables and fruits.  Like all large lizards they are prone to obesity if fed a diet which is too high in fat so rodents although taken readily should only be considered an occasional food.

During the active season they require a high basking temperature and a good quality UVB lighting system.  In the wild they go through a period of brumation during the winter where both appetite and activity levels are suppressed for several months.

These are large and active lizards so require an enclosure of at least 2.4m x 1.2m x 1.2m.
